Sunday's Blog (a day late)

Unless you live on another planet you know there are several things vitally important to Kentucky. Horses are one. Not just any horses but thoroughbred race horses. We toured part of Kentucky Horse Park which is devoted to everything about thoroughbred race horses. Man 0f War and a number of other great horses are buried there.
Driving through the countryside around Lexington you see hundreds of beautiful horse farm. We stopped so I could get a picture of a small group of horses near the road. As I approached them they each stuck their heads over the fence and posed for me. I finally just got tired of taking pictures of horses. This guy was particularly persistent.
Bourbon whiskey is another part of Kentucky's heritage. These casks of bourbon are in a warehouse at Woodford Reserve Distillery. We got a great tour but sadly no samples as it was Sunday and state law prohibits the distribution on liqueur on Sunday in Kentucky. All was not lost as Jim had some at home for us to taste.
Ashland was the home of Henry Clay, The "Great Compromiser" This home is about 2 miles from where Mary Todd Lincoln (Abe's wife) was born and raised. Their families were friends and political allies. Henry Clay was a Senator form Kentucky who ran 3 times for president.

Tomorrow we hope to visit the homes of Henry's cousin Cassius Clay and of Mary Todd Lincoln.

That's one big house! Appropriately named Ashland, it's about the size of the city of Ashland!!
